Strategic partnership between China and Hungary

Budapest, Thursday, May 9, 2024 (MB)

A unique strategic partnership in the European Union has been established between Hungary and China in the spirit of cooperation based on equal rights and mutual interests – the Hungarian Community for Peace assessed the development as a result of the discussions in Budapest between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The multitude of bilateral economic agreements free from ideology and aimed at promoting sovereign national development offer our country the opportunity to offset its unilateral trade dependence on the EU in the medium term, modernize its means of production by introducing leading Chinese techniques and technology, and create an important position for China in Western European integration through Hungary.

At the joint press conference, Xi stated that the relationship between the two countries has never been as good as it is today. China wants to strengthen Hungary in the European Union.

Xi informed Orbán that China is opening the door to Hungarian investments, and Orbán said that the Hungarian state is competing for further Chinese investments, especially in the fields of electronic means of transport, IT, telecommunications, and railways. He also raised the possibility of nuclear energy cooperation, given the knowledge accumulated in Hungary over the past half century, as well as the fact that Europe’s largest nuclear energy development is taking place in Hungary.

As is typical for the friendly relationship between the two countries, Orbán put his faith in the principle of one China and spoke positively of China’s peace plan for Ukraine.

Xi emphasized the importance of the multipolar world order, and Orbán said that since the collapse of the unipolar world order 20 years ago, Sino-Hungarian trade has quadrupled.

Both parties attached great importance to the development of human relations, tourism, the promotion of each other’s culture, and the teaching of the Chinese and Hungarian languages.

President Xi Jinping’s visit to Hungary was very useful and forward-looking for both countries. It proved that national development can be accelerated if cooperation is not hindered by ideological and political considerations, but based on mutual respect, the equality of states, and mutual interests – assessed the Hungarian Community for Peace.+++
