Hungary is reassessing its role in NATO – Reaction to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s announcement

Budapest, Friday, May 24, 2024 (MB)

The president of the Hungarian Community for Peace considers the fact that the government wants to re-evaluate the role of our country in NATO to be a real political step taken in order to protect the peace of Hungary.

Regarding Viktor Orbán’s announcement on Kossuth Radio on Friday morning, Endre Simó said that the prime minister is well aware of the threat to Hungary’s peace and security from NATO’s pro-war policy. Simó assured the support of the Peace Community for the government’s work to clarify how Hungary could remain a member of NATO without having to participate in NATO’s military mission in Ukraine, namely a war against Russia.

The president of the Community for Peace expressed his opinion that if NATO did not abandon its plan to go to war against Russia, and it became obvious that in the event of its direct intervention Hungary would also be dragged into the military conflict, then we would have no choice but to suspend our NATO membership. “You can’t play ‘Kállay double dance’ endlessly and wait to see if we get away with it,” said Simó.

Simó drew attention to the fact that in response to the plan to send NATO troops to Ukraine, nuclear weapons exercises are being held in Russia, and the Russian and Belarusian presidents are discussing a joint strategy in Minsk against NATO’s planned military intervention in Ukraine.+++
