The Hungarian Community for Peace welcomes the messenger of peace in the person of Pope Francis

Budapest, Friday, April 28, 2023 (MB)

The Hungarian Community for Peace assure his support for the the involvement of Pope Francis as a peace mediator in the conflict in Ukraine, and hopes that his visit to Hungary will help preserve the peace of our country so that Hungary can live in peace and in good relations with both the East and the West – the Hungarian Community for Peace said in a statement issued on Friday.

Since its foundation in 2014, when the civil war in Ukraine broke out, the political organization was in contact with the Holy See for the sake of a political settlement, so that the conflict in the neighboring country would not spread to our country, and now Hungary could not dragged into a war from which it could only emerge as a loser, they write.

In its civil diplomatic note forwarded to Rome in January via the papal nunciature in Budapest, the Peace Community emphasized: he pope’s mediating venture can expect success if the ceasefire and the humanitarian goal gain support by emphasizing the need for a comprehensive East-West compromise to create a cooperative world order, instead of a world of confrontation. After all, Russia could rightly interpret the Eastern expansion of NATO and the planned inclusion of Ukraine in NATO as an act aimed at the detriment of its security.

Archbishop Michael W. Banach, papal nuncio in Budapest, called the contents of the list “very important”, and he considered it especially important that the Hungarian people can live in peace and security only if East and West come to terms with each other.

Although the Community for Peace is aware that creating a just peace is a complicated task, given the different worldviews of the opposing parties, it is confident that the Roman Catholic Universal Church does not give up its quest for peace, but continues its noble mission with the support of the vast majority of Hungarian believers and non-believers in order to achieve a comprehensive East-West reconciliation, to which Hungary’s existence is linked.

In the person of Pope Francis, we welcome the harbinger of peace on Hungarian soil – states the statement issued by the Hungarian Peace Circle on Friday. +++
